Meeting with Fingal Council about road safety on Grove Road

November 14, 2024

A meeting recently took place on November 12th at Fingal County Council Offices. The purpose of the meeting was to raise awareness of the concerns that students have about road safety.

TY Cara had carried out a traffic survey on Grove Road on September 29th, and they identified several issues. Four students, Matthew, Garry, Rachel and Aoibheann met with Council staff to address these concerns. Miss O’Hora and Mr Gleeson attended the meeting.

Students met with Angela Donnelly (local councillor), Quintin Greally (Traffic engineer) and Stephen Callaghan (Administrative Officer). The following are some of the concerns raised:

  1. The 50kph speed limit is not appropriate for a school road.
  2. The pedestrian crossing is not in a suitable location for students passing to the shopping centre.
  3. Poles on the footpath are obstructing  access to wheelchairs and buggies on the footpath.
  4. A cycle lane is needed to improve safety for cyclists.

This was a very positive experience for both students and teachers. Angela Donnelly had visited TY Cara in school and following this, she organised a meeting with Council staff for November 12th.  Students are hopeful that their concerns will be addressed and that changes will be implemented. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt that their voices were being heard.
