Cool FM Returns
After 5 years being off air, student radio station Cool FM is back with a bang! The show re-launched on Friday 3 April 2009.
Cool FM aims to bring the magic and fun of music to student’s lunch hour. It aspires to follow in the footsteps of the old Cool FM and produce a professional and top quality radio show. The show will give the students on the Cool FM team a real taste of the pressures of radio. It will air twice monthly.
Cool FM was originally established in 1988 and it was Ireland’s first school radio station. Past teacher Mr. G. Lynch led the team. The idea was to have, in Mr Lynch’s words, ‘a regular student radio with the highest professional standards – real radio as distinct from play radio, with play lists, sponsorships…real jingles…to give students a real experience of the pressure of radio’.
Celebrities who presented on the old Cool FM include Q102 DJ, Stephen Cooper, TV Presenter, Sharon Tobin and RTE Newsreader, Patricia Lane. Tory Fenton and Dusty Rhodes were guests on the show as well.
We asked Mr. Lynch to take a trip down memory lane and tell us about his funniest and fondest memories on the show. On one April Fools Day the Cool FM team ran a competition and the prize was ‘Pollof Air’ (which is an anagram of April Fools). The team also pretended that one of the presenters was broadcasting live from a helicopter, through the use of a long microphone and sound effects. Mr. Lynch’s happiest memories spring from the Special Shows including Patrick’s Day Specials, Hollywood Specials, Disneyland Specials and Valentines Shows.
Students tune in and enjoy the music!
