All-Ireland Cross Country Finals

September 1, 2008

Heartiest congratulations and well done to all our athletes who took part in the All-Ireland Cross Country Championships last Saturday.  The event took place in extremely muddy conditions in Loughrea, Co. Galway. In the Junior Girls’ Race, Claire Brennan was 3rd and Siobhan Doyle came 11th.  The team, made up of Claire, Siobhan, Emma O’Lone and Sophie Freeman won Silver, the first time Coolmine has ever won a team medal at All-Ireland level.

Niamh Doyle (Siobhan’s sister) was a very respectable 16th in the Inter Girls race.  In the Senior Boys, David Flynn came 4th after spending most of the race in 3rd place, and Liam Tremble was 11th. These two had been selected the previous weekend, at the clubs All-Ireland Championships in Belfast, to represent Ireland on the Junior team for the World Cross-Country. Along with team members Andrew Brennan and Colm Carr, the Senior Boys narrowly missed 3rd place.

A tremendous achievement for Coolmine, and a day to remember, especially for the Junior Girls, who left for home with their medals around their necks and covered head-to-toe in mud!
