Arts Week at Coolmine

February 8, 2017

This year Arts Week ran from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th of January 2017. Highlights of the week are available here.

We had some wonderful workshops and artists in the school. All workshops were open to all students and the mix of all year groups, senior and junior students together was a lovely experience. Artists and facilitators commented on the friendly atmosphere in the school and enthusiasm of students.

On Monday Gabi McGrath, head of The Felt-makers Association of Ireland and renowned artist and craft worker gave a workshop in Felt-making. Students made a decorated felt bag with the a wet felting technique. The event event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Anne Marie Buckley form Irish Millinery school gave a full day workshop in Millinery and students made a fleece hat and flower decorations.

A great success of Arts Week was the transforming of the library into a Lego play room, facilitated by The Brickx Club. Groups got to build and play Lego for 80 minute sessions with a drop in session at lunch time.

Annual fixtures of Arts Week included the wonderful Talent show in Draíocht Arts Centre on and the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Those in attendance at the tea party wore hats designed and made by each student themselves and enjoyed, tea, cheese, crackers and dips and the ever popular chocolate fountain.

Friday was a busy day with the tea party, an art therapy session and a visit from renowned caricature artist Niall O’Loughlain who wowed the group with his drawing skills and presented a signed copy of an art work piece to the winner of the caricature drawing competition.
