DEAR Week 2015 (Monday 2nd – Friday 6th March 2015)

March 6, 2015

This was our third Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) initiative of the year. All First, Second and Third Year students were requested to have some reading material in class. Students were encouraged to bring any appropriate material that they enjoyed reading – a book, a magazine, a graphic novel, an annual. Students read quietly from 12.45 – 1.00pm for the week.

This initiative followed a school-wide survey of both students and teachers on previous DEAR weeks in the school, the results of which were overwhelmingly positive. As well as the vast majority of students enjoying DEAR and wanting it to take place more often, the feedback showed a majority also continued reading outside of school time. This is hugely encouraging as reading for pleasure not only allows students to broaden their minds but also access their school-work better and excel academically.

A number of different initiatives are underway in the school to help support the work of DEAR and encourage a reading culture amongst our students.

  • Following a recent book drive Coolmine’s own library recently received 300 new books.
  • The English department have also committed to taking all Junior English classes to the Blanchardstown Library at least once a term, making use of this incredible resource that is right on our doorstep.
  • First years are encouraged to have a book or reading material in their bag at all times to help support the culture of reading for pleasure in Coolmine.
  • Coolmine Library is open to students at lunchtimes during our DEAR week and students are encouraged to find something they will enjoy reading!
