Music

Can you do it if you haven’t done Junior Certificate Music?
Yes! If you have a keen interest in music you will do well at leaving certificate level regardless of whether you have done it for your Junior Certificate. However, you will need to make a special effort to keep up with the class in the early stages

Do you have to be able to play an instrument?
Most students who do Music for Leaving Certificate either play or sing for their practical. Many students perfect their playing skills/singing at senior cylcle.

I haven’t done grades in my instrument. Is this a problem?
No. While a competent performance is expected in the practical exam, you do not have to be a world class performer!

How is the class different from other classes?
Music classes tend to be practical. You do a lot of listening and a lot of work on how the elements of music fit together. Most students say that it is a break from the intensity of some of their other subjects. However, by being on top of the classwork and doing homework regularly you will ensure that you derive maximum benefit from the course.

Who should do this subject?
Students who do well at music have a keen interest in all kinds of music. They are prepared to work hard from the start of fifth year. Many of them have music as a hobby – either playing or listening.

What will I learn if I take Music for Leaving Certificate?
You will learn how to listen to music intelligently and develop and awareness of the elements of music. You will learn about the richness of our musical heritage and how it has been subject to other musical influences. You will get an insight into how the musical greats (including Freddie Mercury!) put their music together and, following their models, learn how to create your own music.
